The Closeness Generating Procedure

Carving out time to go on a date is great, but we're all a little rusty when it comes to dating. Here are some conversation starters that can help!

The Closeness Generating Procedure

How long has it been since you and your partner went on a real date? After having kids, quality one-on-one time with your partner often gets pushed to the bottom of the list. When we had our daughter, we didn’t go out alone for 18 months! And when we finally did, we spent the evening talking about chores, work, or projects around the house.

Over time, we started taking advantage of family visits and offers from the in-laws—grabbing little windows of time to just be together. Sometimes that meant walking through a mall or roaming the streets of New York. Surprisingly, those short escapes turned into core memories: shared jokes, unexpected conversations, tiny moments that boosted our connection for weeks, even months.

At Calamores, we're all about helping parents carve out these moments. Because as much as we love our children, sometimes we need time without them to truly show up with them.

A Cheat Sheet for Real Connection

To help you make the most of that rare night out, here’s a set of deep conversation starters—designed to help you veer away from the mental to-do list and toward real, soul-filling dialogue. They’re inspired by research comparing typical small talk with what psychologists call a “closeness-generating procedure”—basically, questions that bring people meaningfully closer (source).

We adapted some of the questions from these classic studies and listed them below. Give yourself a couple minutes to answer each question and take turns. And don’t mention the kid(s)!

Top 10 Date-Night Questions

  1. Given the choice of anyone in the world—alive, fictional, or dead—who would you want to drive across the country with?
  2. Would you like to be famous? If yes, for what—singing, art, invention, something else?
  3. What would a perfect day look like for you, from start to finish?
  4. If you could wake up tomorrow with one new ability or quality, what would it be?
  5. What’s something you’ve dreamed of doing for a long time, and what’s stopped you?
  6. What is the greatest accomplishment of your life so far?
  7. What is your most treasured memory?
  8. How do you feel about your relationship with your mother?
  9. Is there anything in life you think is too serious to be joked about?
  10. Your house is on fire (everyone’s safe). You have time to save one item—what is it and why?

Alternative Date Idea: Gallery Hop with a Twist

Art is already a great date idea—but why not make it even more playful? Choose a gallery district, then take on alternate personas at each spot. Maybe you’re a bored heiress and a cynical critic. Maybe a pirate and a philosophy professor. As you admire each piece, discuss it in character. It’s unexpected, funny, and surprisingly bonding.

Whether your date is dinner and a walk, or fifteen minutes of laughter between errands, don’t underestimate how much it matters. Being partners—outside of parenting—isn't a luxury. It's part of how you stay strong together.
